On a day where the Nevada parole board voted to release O.J. Simpson from prison, that isn’t the biggest news we’ll remember. Unfortunately, July 20, 2017, will belong to Ole Miss and Hugh Freeze.

Freeze, the embattled Rebels head coach, resigned after the school administration gave him an ultimatum: step down or be fired. Ole Miss’ administration said the ultimatum came after they discovered a “pattern of personal misconduct” when investigating further into Freeze’s phone records. The investigation came after Freeze used a university-issued phone to call an escort service.

Mind you, Freeze’s resignation has nothing to do with the NCAA’s investigation into the school’s 21 alleged violations.

Former Ole Miss and Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville was shocked just like the rest of the country.

“Well, I’m floored to be honest with you,” Tuberville said on ESPN Radio. “I’ve known Hugh Freeze a long time, and I talked to him when he took the job at Ole Miss a few years ago. I hate it for him and his family and his career — everything that goes along with the next 30, 40 years of his life.”

So, where does Ole Miss go from here? Not many coaches will be even interested in the job right now. Tubverville, who coached the Rebels from 1995-1998, says that in addition to the coach, the entire school administration needs a change.

“Personally, I think they just need to go in and just wipe out the entire administration, get everything cleaned out and start over– because obviously people knew what was going on — and just get back to being Ole Miss and clean the slate and get people in there that want to get the job done the right way,” Tuberville said. “You know, it’s just a sad day for them, because people in that state really want to win games and want to be competitive at Ole Miss. And they’ve done a great job to this point. Now, they’ve had a terrible setback.

“They just need a new beginning.”

The Rebels named Matt Luke as their interim head coach for the 2017 season.
