Florida appears to have a quarterback carousel, but this week, the Gators have turned to Luke Del Rio to find some consistency on offense.

Coach Jim McElwain on Monday announced that Del Rio would be the starter this week following his play on Saturday in the win at Kentucky. Del Rio connected with a wide open Freddie Swain in the corner of the end zone on a 6-yard touchdown pass to cap a fourth-quarterback comeback, 28-27.

McElwain was a guest on The Paul Finebaum Show on Monday to explain the decision.

“It wasn’t anything that Feleipe (Franks) did necessarily wrong,” McElwain said. “We’d hit a stagnant point that we just needed a kick-start a little bit and I think Luke did that. He made a couple plays. Obviously he threw an interception, which was not something we wanted and a play that he’d want back. Missed a post later in the game, and yet, I think he did some things to calm the team and yet spark him a little bit and I think that was good. Luke will start this week as the starter and we’ll kind of play it as is with the other two guys.”

Del Rio was 9-for-14 for 74 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Franks was 7-for-12 for 85 yards and one touchdown.

Finebaum asked the coach if the quarterback situation is “week to week” right now.

“That is part of the plan,” McElwain said. “The competition and understanding making the other guys around you play a little better and create some plays yourself is what you’re looking for there. … It makes for good practices.”

Florida will play host to Vanderbilt at noon on Saturday in a game broadcast on ESPN.
