We are nearing the completion of the regular season of college football and different scenarios are being tossed around regarding the final four teams for the College Football Playoff.

The fourth round of rankings for the Playoff Top 25 were released Tuesday and Alabama (No. 1), Auburn (No. 6), and Georgia (No. 7) all appear to have a legitimate shot at the Playoff. Alabama and Auburn will play this weekend with Georgia facing the winner in the SEC Championship Game on December 2. Every team in that group still has an opportunity to build a strong resume heading into the final selection process.

Paul Finebaum joined ESPN’s Tuesday reveal show to discuss the ratings, and he thinks the toughest decision for the committee will be what to do with Auburn if the Tigers win out. Auburn is trying to be the first two-loss team to make the Playoff, and wins over Alabama and Georgia would make it difficult to leave the Tigers out.

Austin Nivison with 247 Sports shared Finebaums comments from the show about the committee trying to decide on what to do with Auburn:

“I think it’s going to be if Alabama loses to Auburn. I think that is so challenging because of some of the reasons you’ve already heard…Possibly if you see some carnage — which we could — whether Ohio State as a two-loss Big Ten champion deserves to get in as well.”

On the other side of the Iron Bowl rivalry, Finebaum addressed a scenario that involved Alabama beating Auburn but losing in the SEC Championship Game to Georgia. He believes the Crimson Tide would likely still be in regardless of that loss:

“I’m not sure it will because winning at Auburn is significant for all the obvious reasons. Auburn just got through beating the No. 1 team in the country. Obviously Rece — if they suffered a bad loss — it might hurt them. I think they will be in regardless, as long as the game is reasonable close.”

Alabama being in regardless of a loss in the SEC Championship would likely reopen the door for talk of two SEC teams in the Playoff. After all, it would appear tough to leave out Georgia if the Bulldogs are able to take down Alabama.

There are countless scenarios to be debated but a lot of football left to be played. One thing is certain: this season of college football is in for an awesome ending.
