Joe Moorhead was officially announced as the head coach at Mississippi State Wednesday in what is being praised as a strong hire for the Bulldogs.

Moorhead comes to Starkville after serving as the OC at Penn State the past two seasons. During his time there, he turned the Nittany Lions offense into one of the best in the Big 10 and helped lead the team to a Big 10 Championship in 2016.

Mississippi State officially introduced Moorhead during a press conference Thursday, and he certainly seems fired up to lead the Bulldogs. He takes over a team that went 8-4 this season and has been bowl eligible every year since 2010.

Here is a look at what Moorhead had to say at his introductory press conference:

On professional challenges coming to the SEC

“There is no greater challenge than the SEC and the SEC West.”

On taking over an already successful program

“First and foremost, I’d like to express my appreciation to coach Mullen and his staff here. This wasn’t a job where we had to go in and bulldoze the dang house, tear up the foundation. The foundation is laid, the walls are up, we just have to add to it, so thanks to Dan Mullen and his staff.”

Goals

No. 1 is to graduate 100% of players, No. 2 is to keep the Egg Bowl in Starkville. Goals are also to make a bowl game, win the SEC West and SEC Championship, and win a National Championship.

Importance of Egg Bowl

“Make sure the dang Egg Bowl stays home right here. I understand rivalry games, what they stand for. I understand the importance now of keeping that trophy home.”

On running the Bulldogs offense

“I will have an OC, but I’m going to run the offense.”

Will not coach Mississippi State during a bowl game

“I haven’t earned it.” He will be at Mississippi State throughout bowl season and will not coach the Penn State bowl game.

On accountability in the program

“Accountability begins with the details, all the little things…We will not be a football team that cuts corners.”

On productivity of players

“Life isn’t just about trying hard, washing machines try hard. It’s about doing things to the best of your ability. I expect you do to do your job.”

On what it means for other teams to play the Bulldogs

“We want teams to know when you step onto the field with the Mississippi State Bulldogs, you’re in for a 15 round fight.”

On importance of precision

“Ultimately, football is a game of precision and execution. We are going to be the most precise team in the country.”
