Auburn running back Kerryon Johnson’s health status has drawn headlines for weeks, and coach Gus Malzahn’s latest update will only extend those discussions the rest of the month.

Johnson, who dealt with shoulder and rib injuries at the end of the regular season, appears still in a wait and see mode, at least given Malzahn’s latest information. Malzahn also added that Johnson’s injuries didn’t require surgery, and he would know more about the availability for the Jan. 1 Peach Bowl.

The SEC Offensive Player of the Year, Johnson had 13 carries for 44 yards in the SEC Championship loss to Georgia, his lowest of the season. But collected 271 yards in wins over Georgia and Alabama in November.

Johnson finished ninth in voting for the Heisman Trophy after he led the SEC with 19 touchdowns.

Johnson led the SEC in rushing yards and rushing yards per game (120), and ranks 14th nationally.
