With win over Georgia, Tennessee, along with Auburn, wins share of SEC regular season title
It’s officially March, and college basketball is certainly getting more exciting.
The Tennessee Volunteers defeated the Georgia Bulldogs 66-61 Saturday night, and with the win, the Vols joined Auburn as co-SEC regular season champions. The Tigers, however, are the SEC tournament’s No. 1 seed. Auburn beat Tennessee earlier this year 94-84.
Tennessee’s Admiral Schofield and Grant Williams led the Vols in scoring. Schofield scored 23 points while Williams scored 22 points. Georgia had three players in double figures: Yante Maten, Rayshaun Hammonds and William Jackson II.
Tennessee had a sluggish first half, but the Vols outscored the Dawgs 32-19 in the second half to help seal the win.
The job Rick Barnes has done this season has been nothing short of incredible. Under Barnes, Tennessee won 15 games in 2015-16 and 16 games in 2016-17; however, this season, Tennessee has won 23 games.
Georgia, on the other hand, finished the regular season 16-14 overall and 7-11 in conference, and the heat just may turn up on head coach Mark Fox.
The SEC tournament starts Thursday, March 8.
