Last year, Derek Mason got a healthy dose of Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa.

The latter played nearly the entire second half in Alabama’s 59-0 rout in Nashville back in September. So unlike most opposing coaches in 2017, Mason got a large in-person sample size of Tagovailoa.

Mason joined WJOX-FM and he discussed the evolution of quarterback transfers, which led to him weighing in on Alabama’s interesting dynamic.

“I know the big talk has been what’s going to happen with Jalen Hurts, but I think he has enough integrity and I think he understands exactly where that program is to actually stay,” Mason said on WJOX. “Because with both of those quarterbacks, they’re formidable, and they’re going to win.”

What’s interesting is that Mason’s comment came on the heels of comments from Hurts’ father going public about his son not wanting to stay at Alabama if he isn’t named the starter.

Mason didn’t go in depth about who he thought would be the starter, but suggesting that Hurts will stay doesn’t seem like a popular opinion in light of the day’s news.

Fortunately for Mason, he won’t have to worry about facing either Hurts or Tagovailoa without Alabama on the 2018 schedule.
