When you get into your professional career, it’s more about who you know than what you know.

According to a report by BamaInsider, Alabama has hired Bob Welton as the program’s next director of player personnel. Welton replaces former personnel director Jody Wright, who left for an on-field coaching role with UAB.

Interestingly, Welton worked for Butch Jones at Tennessee, and now, both are on staff in Tuscaloosa. Welton had to have been highly recommended by Jones to Nick Saban.

After Jeremy Pruitt took over at Tennessee, Welton left the Vols and became Nebraska’s Director of Recruiting Operations, but then, Saban came calling. Welton was hired at Tennessee in 2013, and he’s spent the last five years leading the Vols’ recruiting office.

Welton has also been a scout for the Cleveland Browns from 2004-13 and a high school coach prior to working with the Browns.
