Alabama rising sophomore LB VanDarius Cowan (Palm Beach Gardens, Fl.) has been dismissed from the football team, the Tide announced Monday morning.

“VanDarius has been dismissed from the team and is no longer a part of our football program due to a violation of team rules,” Coach Nick Saban said in the statement. “Each of us has a responsibility to represent The University of Alabama in a first-class way, and failure to meet those standards can’t be tolerated. We wish VanDarius the very best in the future.”

Cowan’s dismissal comes less than a week after police charged him with misdemeanor assault stemming from an incident at a Tuscaloosa bar last month. Cowan was charged with third-degree assault, per The Tuscaloosa News. He’s accused of punching Jesse Ray, 26, at High Tide bar on June 23. Cowan turned himself in Thursday and posted $500 bond.

Cowan played in seven games a true freshman making two tackles. He was rated as a 4-star prospect exiting high school and was ranked as the nation’s No. 78 overall player, the No. 4 OLB and the state of Florida’s No. 15 overall prospect in the class of 2017, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Yes, Alabama is loaded at the LB position, but attrition immediately before fall camp and the season are never ideal.
