One of the beneficiaries of the three-game suspension to Jameis Winston could be former Arkansas quarterback Austin Allen.

Depending on how many quarterbacks Tampa Bay decides to keep on its roster, Allen could be in line to earn one of those spots. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Ryan Griffin are expected to get the bulk of the playing time during Winston’s absence.

Allen has already received some attention from the folks at Tampa’s preseason camp, including the “stick carriers” who chanted his name, according to a video tweeted by Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times.

Allen was criticized around the NFL Draft as struggling with vision and accuracy, and although he was pegged as a “priority free agent” by NFL.com, Allen wasn’t expected to stick long until Winston’s suspension.

Because of Fitzpatrick’s longevity in the league, and Winston’s suspension, combined with starting quarterbacks not playing much in the preseason anyway, Allen has plenty of chances to make waves this preseason.

While backup quarterbacks are generally popular with fans and around the workout facilities, Allen needs to erase some memories of the 2017 season, and bring people back to the potential he showed in 2016.
