It was a busy Sunday for the Tennessee football team.

The Vols went to church together and held a scrimmage where coach Jeremy Pruitt said WR Jauan Jennings and OL Chance Hall didn’t participate, but he thinks both might scrimmage next week. Pruitt said Jennings dove for a ball the other day, and “got a little hyperextended.” Jennings ran around, but avoided contact. Hall also took live reps, but didn’t scrimmage.

Hall has dealt with knee problems in his career, and Jennings is returning from missing almost all of last season with a wrist injury suffered in the season opener against Georgia Tech. Jennings also had a knee scoped and sat out spring practice.

Pruitt reiterated that nothing had changed about tackle Trey Smith’s status, who he previously said would return to full contact around August 19th or 20th.

Overall, Pruitt said it was good to get on the field in a live setting as this was the first scrimmage of its kind for fall camp.

“I saw guys that were competing, but we were inconsistent on both sides of the ball,” Pruitt said. “Had too many undisciplined penalties.”

Pruitt said the Vols took care of the ball running it, but committed turnovers throwing the ball.

Pruitt explained that while players should compete for a starting spot, that shouldn’t be their goal. They should want to be the best at their position across the country.

“As we get into figuring out who the players are going to be at which spots, it gives us an opportunity to try to create some consistency, some rhythm, and we’re not there yet,” he said.

No one has separated into starting positions, including at quarterback, but Pruitt admitted that JT Shrout has the best arm of the group.
