It was a close competition between Joe Burrow and Myles Brennan in the battle to be LSU’s starting quarterback this season.

However, one factor primarily led to Burrow winning the job over Brennan.

Consistency.

“I think consistency, day in and day out,” Tigers coach Ed Orgeron said on the SEC Coaches’ Teleconference on Wednesday.  “It was a very tight race between he and Myles. Grades were very close, but overall, he was the most consistent quarterback throughout the whole camp.”

Burrow beat out not only Brennan, but also Justin McMillan and Lowell Narcisse, both of whom have since transferred.

Burrow will be a starter for the first time in his career after serving in a backup role at Ohio State the past two seasons.

“Joe is very smart. We knew that when we recruited him,” Orgeron said. “He’s a tireless worker. It was an advantage for him that we were putting in a new offense, so he wasn’t that far behind anyone else. He was there for the first day of installation in a lot of this offense. I think that was an advantage.”

Orgeron has stated that he is confident in either Burrow or Brennan leading the offense. That will be a positive, as teams never know if injuries or other external factors will occur throughout the season.

Burrow makes his first career start when LSU plays Miami at AT&T Stadium in Dallas on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
