After starting all but one game over the previous two seasons, Jalen Hurts hasn’t started either of Alabama’s first two games of 2018. That’s because the Crimson Tide have started Tua Tagovailoa, who led them to a comeback win in last year’s College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

Although Hurts appears to have been relegated to a backup role, that hasn’t changed his attitude.

“He’s a hard worker. He’s a competitor. And he never complains,” Crimson Tide wide receiver Henry Ruggs said, according to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz. “He goes out and does what he has to do, keeps a great spirit, and we work hard when we’re together.”

There have been rumors of Hurts potentially transferring after this season, as well as the possibility of him playing in four or fewer games so that he can redshirt this year and have an extra season of eligibility in the future.

But for now, Hurts remains with the Tide.

“Jalen’s a great teammate and I think he’s handled everything great, whatever the coaches decide to throw at him and however it ends up playing out,” Alabama left tackle Jonah Williams said, per Zenitz. “So I think his leadership and his example of being a great teammate has been really great for us as a unit.”

Hurts went 7-for-9 for 93 yards and two touchdowns during this past Saturday’s win over Arkansas State, and he also played in the season opener against Louisville.

It will be interesting to see if Hurts plays in Alabama’s SEC opener against Ole Miss this Saturday. The Crimson Tide and Rebels are set to kick off at 7 p.m. ET.
