Alabama coach Nick Saban is famous among coaching circles for his pickup basketball games, which are normally very competitive affairs (with Saban usually winning).

However, there is such a thing as being too competitive, and current Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase found that out the hard way.

While he was on Saban’s staff at LSU back in the early 2000s, he got suspended from playing in the next week’s basketball game after he got a little physical with fellow assistant Derek Dooley. Hear Gase recall the incident in the audio clip below:

“He got mad at me one time because he thought I was getting too competitive,” he said. “His team was cheating, as always. Me and (Derek) Dooley got into it a little bit and it started getting physical. I was 22 or 23 at the time, so I was trying to get physical with some of the older guys. He made me sit for a week, so I technically got suspended for a week, because as he put it, I never let anybody have any fun and just got too competitive with everything.”

Gase clearly wears the suspension as a badge of honor. No word on if he’s been invited back to games since leaving Saban’s staff.
