As Greg McElroy was sacked, all Verne Lundquist said was, “Oh my goodness, oh!”

It was eight years ago this week that South Carolina shocked the college football world with an upset of No. 1 and defending national champion Alabama.

Led by some all-time players for South Carolina, the Gamecocks led 21-9 at halftime and didn’t look back in a 35-21 victory. Stephen Garcia threw three touchdown passes, Alshon Jeffery caught two TDs, and Marcus Lattimore scored three times as No. 19 South Carolina shocked No. 1 Alabama. For perspective of Alabama’s recent dominance, the Crimson Tide haven’t lost to an SEC East team since that day on Oct. 9, 2010.

“Just didn’t seem to have the tenacity to be able to overcome the difficult circumstance like we needed to, and that’s one thing that I think we all learned from that season,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said in an interview with the SEC Network.

The loss snapped Alabama’s 19-game winning streak, and for some, it’s the biggest win of the Steve Spurrier era at South Carolina. McElroy passed for a career-high 315 yards, but was sacked seven times, which proved to be the difference.
