The battle for state supremacy is on, both Texas A&M and that other school in Austin are on the rise and Aggies’ head coach Jimbo Fisher is building fences around the Lone Star State.

No, Fisher doesn’t own the state of Texas, one of the nation’s most fertile recruiting grounds. Not yet anyway, but he’s certainly making strides. In the Class of 2019, the Aggies got 6 of the state’s top 13 recruits, including the top 2, according to 247Sports. com.

Both 5-star recruits, OT Kenyon Green (6-4, 322), from Humble Atascocita, and DT DeMarvin Leal (6-4, 289), from Converse Judson, should help continue Fisher’s philosophy of physical play in the trenches.

Green is ranked No. 2 nationally at his position while regarded as the No. 11 overall recruit in the country. He was named the Houston Touchdown Club 2018 Offensive Player of the Year.

Leal is considered the No. 3 DT in the country, totaling 195 tackles over three seasons at Judson, including 43 tackles for loss (13 sacks).

The two helped solidify one of the strongest classes to ever be assembled at Texas A&M. The latest haul pushed the Aggies to a No. 4 ranking nationally by 247Sports.com. Along with the two 5-stars, Texas A&M got 14 4-star recruits in this year’s class, along with 10 3-stars as the dust settled on National Signing Day and the 2019 cycle.

While Fisher works to corral the state’s top recruits, he continues to bring in the nation’s top talent from multiple states. Of the 6 5-star recruits from Texas, only 3 remained in state. Likewise of Texas’ top 10 recruits, just 5 remained in state, with the Aggies getting 3 of them.

With most of the recruiting having already been done with Early Signing Period in December, the Aggies added only a few more Wednesday. Fisher landed just about every recruit targeted, and that’s counting 4-star DE Braedon Mowry and 4-star DT Josh Ellison, who plan to sign officially after working out academic issues.

Nobody bats 1.000, not even Nick Saban, but Fisher came pretty close with this class. He addressed needs in the secondary with 3 4-star signings and got 4-star DE Derick Hunter to flip from Florida State to Texas A&M in December.

Overall he told the SEC Network that he was very happy with the 2019 Class.

“Up front,” Fisher said, is where he was most pleased. In the trenches on both sides of the football. But not just there, Fisher said he felt he improved the program in every aspect. “We hit everything across the board,” Fisher said. I think we got a difference-maker at every level.”

It was an outstanding haul to be sure and one that by all accounts should continue the Aggies’ rise as contenders in the SEC West.
