Arkansas landed a nice transfer Saturday afternoon.

Former Arizona State RB Trelon Smith committed to the Hogs, per 247Sports.

The Houston, Texas, native signed with the Sun Devils in the class of 2017 as a 3-star prospect and was ranked as the nation’s No. 9 all-purpose back and the state of Texas’ No. 79 overall prospect, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The 5-foot-8, 181-pound back will certainly add depth to the Hogs’ backfield, but due to the NCAA transfer rule, he’ll have to sit out the 2019 season and be ready for 2020. He’s set to enroll at Arkansas this summer.

Smith rushed for just 56 yards on four carries in 2018 after appearing as a freshman in 2017 mostly on special teams.

For now this spring, though, the Hogs will have to count on Devwah Whaley and Chase Hayden as the primary backs. Keeping the duo healthy will be paramount as Rakeem Boyd recovers from shoulder surgery.
