Georgia held its first scrimmage of spring practice Saturday.

Kirby Smart spoke to the media. Overall, he seemed pleased with the scrimmage as it relates to the physicality portion of it, and he added that early enrollee QB Dwan Mathis “got better today.”

Below is a summary of the high points from Smart’s time with the media:

  • Thought we had a good scrimmage. Pleased with the effort and enthusiasm.
  • Defensively, we started out really well.
  • Inconsistency showed up sometimes by not sustaining drives offensively and explosive plays on defense. Defense gave up a couple explosive plays and they have to change that.
  • Smart’s goal was to have a physical scrimmage, and he thought the team accomplished that.
  • Smart singled out early enrollee QB Dwan Mathis and complemented his play. He thought Mathis did some good things with his feet. “He got better today.”
  • “Overall, I was pleased with the effort from the guys.”
  • There was not really a “wow moment” in the scrimmage. Smart noted that UGA is looking for WRs to step up to make the offense “dangerous.”
  • Smart said he’s trying to find a returner this spring with respect to special teams.
  • Smart said Jake Fromm has made good decisions and done well thus far.
  • Smart mentioned Tyler Clark and Jordan Davis as “difference-makers” on the DL.
