Former Mississippi State star Will Clark will receive the rare and prestigious honor of having his No. 22 retired by the San Francisco Giants.

The team announced the move during a pregame ceremony Sunday to honor the 1989 World Series team. The retirement will happen next year.

“I am so proud. I am so happy,” Clark said, according to Maria Guardado of MLB.com. “To know you’re going to be up there on the wall with all the greats — the Willie Mayses, the Willie McCoveys, the Barry Bondses — everybody that has come through this organization and worn this Giants jersey is absolutely unbelievable. It’s something I will never forget. It is my Hall of Fame. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

A first-round draft pick in 1985, Clark played for the Giants for eight seasons, earned five All-Star appearances and finished in the top five in National League MVP voting four times. In 1989, Clark batted .333 with 23 home runs to help the Giants win 92 games and reach the World Series for the first time since 1962.

This is the latest honor following a storied career in college and Major League Baseball. Clark was inducted into the Mississippi State University Hall of Fame in 2003, the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006, the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Clark in 1985 became the first player in SEC history to win the Golden Spikes Award, the same year he was a first-round pick by the Giants. His .391 batting average is a school record, he finished a 15-year MLB career with a .303 career average.
