LSU recently hired a new defensive line coach, Bill Johnson, after the previous DL coach, Dennis Johnson, suffered injuries to both legs in an offseason basketball incident.

Following the Tigers’ second scrimmage on Saturday, coach Ed Orgeron clarified their roles. Orgeron said Dennis Johnson is a full-time analyst, along with Kenechi Udeze, while Bill Johnson is the full-time defensive line coach. Orgeron said Bill Johnson has always wanted to coach at LSU.

“He’s a great staff guy,” Orgeron said. “Dave (Aranda) is going to love him and he’s a great recruiter. We will revisit everything after this season as to who will be DL coach going forward.”

Bill Johnson, 64, is a native of Monroe, Louisiana, and a veteran DL coach, most recently with the Los Angeles Rams. He was not retained after last season. He attended Northwestern State, and later coached at McNeese State, Louisiana Tech, Arkansas and Texas A&M. Bill Johnson has been a mentor to LSU coach Ed Orgeron since he coached him in college. In the NFL, he also coached with the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos and New Orleans Saints.
