The Washington Redskins are going to give a former LSU running back a chance to prove himself early in the NFL season.

Former Tigers standout Derrius Guice will be the Redskins’ starter for their Week 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, head coach Jay Gruden confirmed while meeting with reporters Thursday, according to Mike Jones of USA Today. Guice missed all of the 2018 season with a torn ACL.

Guice, who was selected by Washington in the second round of the 2018 draft, made a positive impression during training camp and the preseason, particularly in Week 3, when he had 11 carries for 44 yards against the Atlanta Falcons.

After Guice played at LSU from 2015-17, his NFL career has gotten off to a slow start as he tore his ACL during the first preseason game of 2018.

As the Redskins continue to utilize younger players, Guice should have plenty of opportunities to showcase his skills this season. In fact, Gruden indicated Thursday that veteran running back Adrian Peterson, the team’s leading rusher last season, could be a healthy scratch on Sunday. The Redskins haven’t decided if they’ll dress three or four running backs, which could impact that decision.

It’ll be a tough matchup for Guice in his NFL debut, however, as the Eagles ranked seventh in the NFL in rush defense last year. Guice and the Redskins will also be going into a hostile environment at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

The Redskins and Eagles are set to kick off on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
