Dan Mullen spoke to this idea following Florida’s win over Kentucky on Saturday. Now former Florida coach Jim McElwain has echoed comments about backup QB Kyle Trask.

“I think he’s a guy that once he commits to something, he sees it through,” said McElwain, now the coach at Central Michigan, on a Mid-American Conference coaches media teleconference, according to Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times. “I know he’s going to make the most of this opportunity.”

Against Kentucky, Trask was 9-for-13 passing for 126 yards, and also had a 4-yard TD run. He helped the Gators score 19 unanswered points following the injury to Feleipe Franks, which brought him in the game.

Both McElwain and Mullen said it’s a testament to Trask’s character that in the age of the transfer portal and quarterbacks in particular transferring regularly, Trask stayed at Florida and has graduated.

Trask, a Manvel, Texas native, was signed by McElwain, but didn’t see any action in 2016 as he ultimately redshirted, and then was injured before the 2017 season.

Trask saw limited action last season against Charleston Southern, Colorado State, Tennessee and Missouri as a backup quarterback. He suffered a foot injury following the Missouri game that cost him the remainder of that season.
