Count Ed Orgeron among those on board with the 2022 matchup between LSU and the Southern Jaguars.

LSU recently agreed to its first-ever game with nearby Southern University even though the schools are separated by just nine miles. The schools haven’t pegged an exact date yet, but 2022 will be the year.

Orgeron noted his relationship with Southern coach Dawson Odums.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Orgeron said Monday at his regular weekly press conference. “I don’t do the scheduling, that’s not my wheelhouse. But if we play Southern, I love Coach O, I love Southern. We camp together, and he’s a great man. I think it’s great for the city of Baton Rouge. I think the more we can stay together with the schools in Louisiana and support each other, the better.”

The Tigers have played every in-state school but Southern, Grambling and Nicholls State, which is on the schedule next season on Oct. 3. LSU played Louisiana Tech and Southeastern Louisiana in 2018, Louisiana-Monroe in 2003, 2010, and 2014, McNeese State in 2010, the Ragin’ Cajuns in 2009, and Northwestern State in 2011 and this season.
