Dissecting the Georgia loss to South Carolina has taken up a lot of attention this week. But former Georgia star QB D.J. Shockley has also weighed in on an area where future opponents may focus.

It’s the lack of separation with the receivers on the outside.

“I think a lot of teams are going to do it going forward, especially if they have the players on the back end” Shockley said on a podcast from the Athens Banner-Herald. “… It wasn’t at all times and in all situations. It was when South Carolina wanted to play man coverage, and it usually happened on third down and as we know, those are the most critical downs in a ball game is third down. South Carolina said, ‘All right, we’re going to use our big guys up front, we’re going to man guys on the outside and we’re going to challenge your receivers.’ I thought Georgia wasn’t able to separate from the defensive backs a lot of times, and it even created tighter windows. I think a lot of people are enamored with the back shoulder throw, which (Jake) Fromm does it with the best of them. But I think it comes down to because the receivers aren’t winning and they’re even with the defensive backs, the best possible throw that gives your player a chance to win is the back shoulder.”

The task now for the coaching staff is to find separation through formation and motion because defenses like Florida and Auburn will take a page from South Carolina’s defense, Shockley said.

George Pickens led Georgia with 7 catches for 98 yards, and Demetris Robertson had 5 catches for 51 yards and a TD. Lawrence Cager, who had 4 catches for 48 yards, left the game with shoulder and rib injuries.

Shockley added that offensive coordinator James Coley has done a good job, but he figured Georgia would stretch the field a lot more this season than it has so far.

“Down the field is I think where Georgia can improve, and I think that’s where Coley will try to improve,” Shockley said. “… When they do get into more spread sets, I want to see more down the field concepts, RPO-type plays that gives those guys a chance to win. … last week was a good eye-opening experience.”

Plenty of fans will be interested to see the changes and adjustments Coley and the offense come out with this week against Kentucky.
