Backup QB Joey Gatewood is no longer with the Auburn football program, as first reported by Brandon Marcello of Auburn Undercover. Gus Malzahn confirmed the news during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference.

Gatewood did not attend practice Tuesday and considered whether to leave the team Tuesday night. He ended up making the decision to leave, and he announced his transfer news on social media.

Gatewood has played in seven games this season, and last week at LSU, he had one carry for two yards. He’s largely registered production as a rusher for the Tigers as Gatewood is just 5-for-7 passing for 54 yards and two touchdowns. He has 29 carries for 148 yards and three touchdowns.

Gatewood met with Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and staff members in the early afternoon Tuesday to discuss his future.

Gatewood’s discussion with Malzahn and other staffers at Auburn came on the heels of a sub-par performance by the offense in which Gatewood’s role was diminished as a “package” quarterback behind starter Bo Nix. Nix won a preseason competition to be the starting quarterback, but the Auburn offense has struggled in recent weeks, most notably in a loss at LSU on Saturday.
