Former Arkansas and Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said in a radio interview that a member of the athletics administration reached out to him following the firing of coach Chad Morris.

Nutt, who coached the Razorbacks to a 75-48 record from 1998 to 2007, didn’t detail the content of the call, but admitted that Jon Fagg called him. Many reported names in the mix for the opening are Memphis coach Mike Norvell, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, Washington State coach Mike Leach, former Tennessee coach and Alabama analyst Butch Jones, and Florida Atlantic coach Lane Kiffin.

“The assistant AD has called me, just to lay out — kinda, touch base deal, nothing big,” Nutt said on 103.7 The Buzz. “I don’t know, I think they are down the road a little bit. I think they have zeroed in on a few guys, and again, it’s still probably early, but you don’t know. This is a very important hire and we all, course, love Arkansas and right now, boy, this is a turning point.”

Nutt left Arkansas to coach four years at Ole Miss, which resulted in a 24-26 record. Nutt joined CBS Sports Network in 2012 as a college football studio analyst.

Nutt said Arkansas fans have reached out to him about the 12 players who the program has lost and they’re concerned about the flurry of decommitments.

“This is going to be very, very important and recruiting, course, I wouldn’t worry too much a lot about the decommits,” he said. “… well that’s going to happen because you don’t know who your leader is yet. That can change and the other thing is, is that Arkansas is important. That’s the first and foremost to the state of Arkansas and make sure that the coaches that are there, Barry Lunney, and other coaches are making sure that you’re still touching base with those guys.”
