Auburn’s offensive coordinator situation changed in a matter of hours with Kenny Dillingham’s departure and the hire of Chad Morris.

The switch at the staff position did not cause any concern since head coach Gus Malzahn has been the play-caller this season. But reporters were curious about the new offensive coordinator’s role when Malzahn met with the media recently at an Outback Bowl media event in Tampa. Malzahn was asked about what role the former Arkansas head coach will have going forward.

“I’m going to call the plays in the bowl game,” Malzahn said, according to Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times. “(Morris is) going to assist me. He’ll kind of learn our guys and everything that goes with it. Next year, we’re still working through some things about how it’s going to go down, but he’ll have a lot of influence.”

The former Arkansas head coach is a close friend of Malzahn’s and subscribes to the Auburn coach’s offensive philosophy. In the Malzahn era, play-calling has been handled both by the head coach (2013-to-mid-2016; 2019) and by offensive coordinators (mid-2016-2018). Malzahn and Morris have plenty of time to figure out play-calling for 2020.
