This is the time of year when NFL scouts and media personalities like to make comparisons between NFL Draft prospects and established or former NFL players.

FOX Sports’ Colin Cowherd said he learned this technique from Atlanta Falcons executive Rich McKay from his days running the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Cowherd then went into a detailed explanation of LSU QB Joe Burrow, and said he’s not Deshaun Watson or Russell Wilson.

“Low end, Nick Foles, but high end Tony Romo,” Cowherd said. “They even wear the same number. Had Tony Romo transferred to LSU or Georgia or Alabama or Oklahoma, you would’ve known who Tony Romo is, and he would’ve been drafted very high and Tony Romo would’ve won 10 or 11 games.”

Romo, of course, played at Eastern Illinois, and Cowherd added the Foles, who played at Arizona and Michigan State, had some basketball interest in college.

“Joe Burrow is Tony Romo,” Cowherd said. “He’s got a good arm, but it’s not special. He’s athletic, but he’s not a freak … Likable, smart, excellent leadership skills, willing to throw the ball up for grabs, he’s a risk taker, Burrow’s a risk taker, and my kind of risk taker, he doesn’t play cautious football.”
