Jimbo Fisher is wrapping up what looks to be his 2nd consecutive top 6 recruiting class at Texas A&M. That would be an impressive showing anywhere else, but the Aggies are 4th in the SEC — and 3rd in the SEC West.

Catching Alabama and LSU is the level to which Fisher hopes to elevate the Texas A&M program and he’s done an excellent job of pointing the program in that direction. Here are 3 keys to the 2020 Class, which includes 22 signed recruits already.

1. Plucking the best in state

Fisher correctly preaches that in order to be a national power, a program must be able to recruit nationally. Fisher is doing that. But Texas is loaded, and it’s also imperative that he continues to pull the best talent from within the state as well.

In the ongoing battle with that school in Austin, the Aggies are getting their share of the talent pool. Heading into National Signing Day on Wednesday, Fisher had signatures from 2 of the top 4 rated recruits in the state.

Cibolo safety Jaylon Jones tops the list. The 5-star is the nation’s highest rated player at his position and should help the Aggies’ secondary return to respectability. In addition, Tomball wide receiver Demond Demas is another 5-star who should help Fisher replenish that position.

But still the recruiting struggle rages on for talent in Texas. The Aggies have 12 players signed from the Lone Star State, while the Longhorns inked 16.

2. Zachary Evans?

Where will this 5-star running back from North Shore land?

The top-rated recruit from Texas and No. 2-rated running back in the nation (16th-rated recruit overall nationally) can’t officially sign Wednesday because he had already signed during the Early Signing Period with Georgia only to be later released from his Letter of Intent.

Now many project he will still wind up a Bulldog, but Texas A&M as well as LSU seemingly remain in the mix. Evans has no scheduled announcement for Wednesday.

The 5-11, 200-pounder combines blazing speed with a powerful approach. He helped North Shore to the state championship in his junior year of high school but was suspended for the state finals game his senior year where North Shore returned to defend its title. He has already graduated from high school.

He would be a major addition for Texas A&M. He will be a major addition for whichever school he chooses to attend.

3. There’s a future QB, too

Kellen Mond is the unquestioned starter, but the future never stops.

Fisher added 4-star dual-threat QB Haynes King, the No. 5 dual-threat in the class and the No. 19 player overall from Texas.

King is rangy at almost 6-3, 189 pounds. But he’s the higest-rated QB recruit Fisher has brought in, and he’s already enrolled.

4. Stockpiling talent

As mentioned, Fisher is bringing in another highly-regarded recruiting class as he begins to stockpile talent. Coming into Wednesday, Fisher has addressed some vital needs in the trenches, the secondary and receiver, as well as to a lesser extent running backs and linebackers.

You can never have enough talent or depth in the trenches, where games are won or lost. Fisher has 9 new faces among this year’s class, 5 on offense, including a pair of 4-star guards, and 4 more on defense, which includes a couple of 4-star ends from out of state.

In addition to the 5-star Jones, Fisher is adding a trio of 4-star talent to a beleaguered secondary. And we will see how 5-star Demas fits into a receiving corps depleted by graduation and early entry to the NFL Draft. A 4-star and a couple of in-state 3-star receivers are also arriving on the scene as well.
