In the era of the NCAA Transfer Portal, it is becoming more and more common for players to finish their careers somewhere different than where they originally signed. Tennessee QB Jarrett Guarantano put any transfer talk to rest when he tweeted an “unfinished business” graphic in January.

This week, Guarantano opened up on that unfinished business in a video shared by the official Twitter account of Tennessee football.

“My unfinished business for 2020 is to be the best quarterback that I can be, be a leader of this football team and to go to the SEC Championship,” Guarantano said.

The unfinished business comes at the end of the video. Guarantano spent much of the clip looking back on the 2019 season.

“The beginning of the year for me was definitely very challenging,” he said. “It was nothing that I had envisioned going into the year. Obviously I had to take a step back for a couple of games and come off the bench, but it really taught me a lot about myself. It taught me a lot about the teammates around me, my friends, my family. And being able to do that, I think it made me a better football player and a better person.

“It taught me that I was determined. It taught me that I can get through the tough times. Being able to really get a six-game win streak and end it off with a bowl win, it really meant a lot. I mean, honestly, starting out the way that we did, there was probably nobody that thought we would even make it to 6-6 or whatever it was. But being able to go 8-5 and finish off the year like we did was impressive to us, and we just know that we have a lot going into this year riding and we know that we have to capitalize.

“The things that kept me motivated most last year was really my teammates, my family. They kept me up, they kept me energized and they kept me wanting to keep going on. Without them, I don’t think that I would have been able to do the things that I did last year.”

Guarantano is aware that up-and-down play resulted in him getting benched. He looks to change that in his final season.

“I want to show everyone that I can be the most consistent,” Guarantano said. “The past couple of years, I haven’t been very consistent, it’s been very up and down, but this coming year, I’m going to take it week by week.”

The senior quarterback thinks that coaching continuity will help in that area.

“This is my first time in my career that I’m going to have a coordinator for a second year, and I think it’s going to impact me a lot for the good,” Guarantano said. “I have to go in every day and absolutely make myself learn new things, but being able to have the same coordinator is definitely good for myself and good for my teammates.”

Guarantano is also embracing his leadership role.

“I can definitely grow as a leader in this upcoming season, just from whether that’s staying extra hours in the night, or that’s even being more vocal for my teammates,” he said. “Going into this year, I know it’s my senior year and I know that I have to speak up some more.”
