A second wave of COVID-19 has hit the construction crew at Bryant-Denny Stadium, according to AL.com’s Joseph Goodman.

As many as 35 workers have tested positive for the virus, but work is continuing because of the tight deadline ahead of the college football season. The first wave of the virus hit in May.

Alabama is in the middle of a $107 million renovation to its beloved stadium, and the deadline for completing the renovation is mid-August. The first Alabama football home game isn’t until September 12, however.

Caddell Construction Company provided an email response to AL.com’s inquiry regarding why work hasn’t been stopped and masks haven’t been made mandatory.

“We are committed to the health and safety of our workforce. We continue to meet or exceed the evolving OSHA and CDC guidelines, along with ongoing training and constant safety and health reminders,” Caddell said in its statement. “Temperature checks every morning and hand washing stations throughout the site are standard procedure, as well as strong encouragement to wear masks and practice social distancing. Anyone who exhibits symptoms is sent home immediately.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is a difficult challenge added to a complex project. We are proud of our team and their dedication to caring for our workforce at Bryant-Denny. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have tested positive and with everyone who is working hard on the project every day.”

The renovation to Bryant-Denny Stadium has an estimated 230 construction workers on site.
