It was a scrimmage weekend for Ole Miss last week in fall camp, but the Rebels were limited by numerous absences.

“We were down a number of people,” head coach Lane Kiffin told reporters Tuesday, per 247Sports’ OM Spirit. “We had 27 guys out, either injury or COVID related. That was challenging. Unfortunately, you don’t have three’s, so a lot of guys had to play a lot of snaps. Some guys didn’t get to play as much as we’d liked in certain positions.”

The absences included quarterback John Rhys Plumlee, who is dealing with hamstring tightness according to OM Spirit’s report.

Without a numbers breakdown from Kiffin, it’s unclear how many players are dealing with injuries and how many are in COVID-19 quarantine for either a positive test or high-risk contact. Neither situation, though, is good news less than three weeks out from the start of the season.

It’s a good sign that Ole Miss was still able to scrimmage. Other SEC programs have called off scrimmages and canceled practices due to players in COVID-19 quarantine.

For Kiffin’s first game as Ole Miss head coach, the Rebels host No. 8 Florida on Sept. 26. The game is set for a 11 a.m. CT (noon ET) kickoff in Oxford. The game will air on ESPN.
