Russell Shepard had a chance to continue his NFL career this season, but has elected to step away from football.

The former LSU star posted on Instagram that he has retired following a seven-year NFL career that included stops with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers and most recently, the New York Giants. Shepard did it on his 30th birthday, and referenced that he looked forward to showing that “we are more than athletes, just watch.”

Shepard declined an offer to work out for the Baltimore Ravens during training camp. He finished his career with 60 catches for 847 yards and six touchdowns, and also contributed on special teams.

According to his LSU bio, Shepard, a multi-threat player who played three positions – quarterback, running back and wide receiver – with the Tigers after he came to LSU as the nation’s top dual-threat quarterback as a senior in high school in 2008.

At LSU, he played in 49 games with 14 starts. He finished with 733 rushing yards and 565 receiving yards on 58 catches, and scored 10 career touchdowns. He graduated in December of 2012 with a degree in general studies.
