Kentucky to name media work room in memory of fan responsible for 'Not Jerry Tipton'
Kentucky is set to unveil a gesture that Lee Stewart would have thought to be unbelievable.
The Wildcats are naming the media work room at the Joe Craft Center in honor of Stewart, the UK fan who died recently, but is known for the “Not Jerry Tipton” Twitter account. Stewart, 52, an Alabama attorney by trade and Twitter parodist by love, passed away about a month ago.
Stewart, a Kentucky alumnus and fan, had followed the writing style of long-time journalist Jerry Tipton, who has been the beat writer for the Lexington Herald-Leader covering Kentucky basketball for almost 4 decades. Stewart graduated from UK in 1992.
In his Twitter bio, the real Tipton wrote that he has covered the program since the “1981-82 season, In that time, UK has played 1,127 games, won three national champions.”
Tipton reported that donations can be made to UK Athletics and mailed to: the KFund Attn: Candice Chaffin, University of Kentucky, Joe Craft Center, 338 Lexington Ave. Lexington KY 40506.
As Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio, another passionate follower of UK basketball, called it a “Very nice gesture by UK and one that he would have been astounded and honored by.”
UK plans to name the Media Work Room at the Joe Craft Center for the late Lee Stewart (aka “Not Jerry Tipton”). Donations can be made to UK Athletics and mailed to: the KFund Attn: Candice Chaffin, University of Kentucky, Joe Craft Center, 338 Lexington Ave. Lexington KY 40506
