Behold, 1 of the dumbest special teams plays of the year happened Friday night

Houston Cougars wide receiver Bryson Smith is going to be hearing about this one for a while.

In a 2020 season where we’ve seen defense be non-existent at times, special teams has really suffered, too. Losing spring practice really hurt a lot of teams on both the defensive and special teams front, and it’s caused chaos in college football.

Smith may have set an all-time new low Friday night against the BYU Cougars when he made a fair catch … at the 1-yard-line. Seriously.

We’ve also seen players make fair catches inside the 10-yard-line, too. It’s not that hard to know exactly where you are on the field when the punt is made. There’s always a strong chance the punt team can’t down the punt near the goal line and it usually rolls into the end zone for a touchback.

Smith’s fair catch will be shown over and over:

BYU beat Houston 43-26 Friday night.
