A lot of people are excited about Tua Tagovailoa’s first NFL start. This Sunday, the former Alabama standout is set to start under center for the Miami Dolphins against the Los Angeles Rams. And after Tagovailoa was selected with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, there are high expectations.

But not everybody is sure that Tagovailoa will go on to have success. That includes Colin Cowherd of FS1, who shared some of his concerns regarding Tagovailoa on “The Herd” on Thursday. And most of them stem from the size of Tagovailoa, who is 6-foot tall.

“Tua is small and isn’t really that athletic,” Cowherd said on the show. “So he has to be like 2016 polling — he has to be a historic exception. Can he be Drew Brees? Good god, that’s asking a lot. Drew Brees is the outlier in the history of football. Small, doesn’t have a huge arm, doesn’t run around and wins.”

That didn’t matter for Tagovailoa during his time at Alabama, where he was a Heisman Trophy finalist and passed for 7,442 yards and 87 touchdowns over 32 games in three seasons.

But now, Tagovailoa is set to face more difficult competition in the NFL. And Cowherd believes there’s a chance that the former Crimson Tide quarterback may not live up to the hype.

“I’m driving this morning and I’m like, ‘Wait a minute. This could be terrible. This could not work at all,'” Cowherd said. “This is why you have to play Tua now. You have to find out. You have to find out, put him out there, eight games, let’s watch. And I hope I’m wrong, and maybe I am wrong.”

Tagovailoa’s Dolphins and the Rams are set to kick off on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
