A week ago, Alabama coach Nick Saban upset some fans when discussing Jaylen Waddle’s season-ending injury he noted, “You’re not supposed to bring a ball out when you’re that deep in the end zone.”

The comment came during his halftime interview with CBS Sports sideline reporter Jamie Erdahl. AL.com’s Mark Heim chatted with Erdahl to discuss a variety of topics, including her thoughts on her Alabama-Tennessee game halftime interview with Saban.

“I thought his delivery was interesting about choosing to say he’s out,” Erdahl told Heim. “He waited a couple of seconds and said he’s out for the season. He really had to make a decision there to disclose. He really didn’t have to. I thought it was interesting how it came out.”

Erdahl believes the “not supposed to bring a ball out” comment came from a coach being in game mode.

“I saw some responses people were getting on him for critiquing Jaylen Waddle for coming out of the end zone,” Erdahl said. In my opinion, the guy just finished coaching an intense half of football. His brain is in football (mode), so he’s going to give the appropriate response in the environment he’s in.

“After the game, he was clearly distraught. Clearly he wanted to talk about how fine of a young man Jaylen Waddle is, how terrible the injury was.”

Erdahl and the CBS crew is at the Auburn-LSU game Saturday.
