Alabama enters Week 9 of the SEC season with a 6-0 record and ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25. Nick Saban’s squad has not officially clinched the SEC West, but is in the driver’s seat heading into a stretch of Kentucky, Auburn and Arkansas with the LSU game potentially being rescheduled.

If Alabama reaches the SEC Championship Game, the game against the SEC East champ will likely serve as a play-in for the College Football Playoff. The CFP selection committee will reveal its first Top 25 on Nov. 24. In the AP Top 25, Notre Dame is behind Alabama at No. 2 and Ohio State is No. 3.

On a recent airing of ESPN’s College Football Live, analyst Greg McElroy was asked whether the Fighting Irish or the Buckeyes would be the more difficult CFP opponent for his alma mater.

“I just think they have more pieces offensively you have to account for,” McElroy, per Riley Gates of 247Sports. “I think Notre Dame’s excellent running the football, I think they’re decent at wide receiver and getting better, but Ohio State is a nightmare matchup for anybody, just because of how many different things you have to try to defend. The quarterback run, the individual matchup on the outside, being able to run the football between the tackles and on the perimeter. I would say Ohio State is the more difficult team to defend, therefore the more difficult matchup.”

Ohio State and Alabama last met in the 2014 postseason. Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes won 42-35 in the CFP semifinal game at the Sugar Bowl.
