South Carolina is a team that has had shrinking scholarship numbers, and that has caused a problem in its preparations for Georgia this week.

Interim coach Mike Bobo shared on the SEC coaches media teleconference about how bad it is, and that leading receiver Shi Smith is doubtful to play, and in concussion protocol.

“We can’t field a scout team right now… we have kickers and punters repping as George Pickens out there… we have shortened practice format, trying to keep guys fresh, physically and mentally, it’s been a long season,” Bobo said.

The Gamecocks have lost several recruits since the firing of Will Muschamp, and Bobo explained how tough it’s been to hold the class together.

“Coach Muschamp was the main recruiter on all these guys. He touched base with all those kids daily… their main connection was the head coach,” Bobo said. “The thing we try to do is be honest with these kids and tell them what we know, which isn’t much at this time… Coach (Ray) Tanner has also reached out to some kids and preach patience with these kids.”

Bobo also shared his impressions of JT Daniels’ debut at Georgia.

“I was very impressed with him, he made throws that seemed effortless… he threw accurate balls, moved the chains and when they picked up the pressure, he put nice touch on the deep ball,” Bobo said. “When I was at Colorado State, I visited with them during recruiting camp and he happened to be there. He was working his tail off… They talked about how smart he was, lightyears ahead of many that come into college.”

Finally, Bobo tried to correct the record over how many times Kirby Smart intercepted him in practice when they were at Georgia together in the 1990s.

“He said that last night, I said it was one time and he said multiple times,” Bobo said. “I do remember him being cocky and flipping the ball at me… he was the guy that was around the ball… we called him lucky… probably someone ran the wrong route, that’s why he picked me off.”
