After Gus Malzahn was fired by Auburn on Sunday, it didn’t take long for rumors to start flying about potential replacements. And some of the names weren’t too surprising, such as Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze and Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal.

But here’s a surprising one — Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin.

According to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz, Kiffin is among the names that have been mentioned as “being of interest to at least some of the behind the scenes power players” at Auburn. Zenitz also listed Freeze, Cristobal and Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian.

It would be a huge move if Kiffin opted to leave Ole Miss after only one season for Auburn. The Rebels are 4-4 in his first year at the helm (with one regular-season game remaining at LSU on Saturday), but there’s a lot of optimism for the future.

However, it wouldn’t be the first time that Kiffin left a head-coaching job after one season. He went 7-6 at Tennessee in 2009, then left for USC and went 28-15 over four seasons as the Trojans’ head coach.

After Kiffin was fired by USC, he was the offensive coordinator at Alabama from 2014-16 and the head coach at Florida Atlantic from 2017-19. He went 26-13 during his time with the Owls, which helped him get back to the SEC as a head coach for Ole Miss.

Would Kiffin have interest in succeeding Malzahn, who was Auburn’s head coach for eight seasons? That remains to be seen. But it would certainly be a huge move if it happened.
