Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, who’s the new Texas head coach, has been described as an average coach by some, largely because of his head coaching record in the Pac-12 at Washington and Southern Cal, where he went 46-35. Had one losing record and three 7-6 years. His best record was 9-4 at USC.

But on his regular appearance on “The Roundtable” on WJOX 94.5 in Birmingham, Alabama, SEC Network host Paul Finebaum said it was more about the messy breakup from Tom Herman with Texas, than Sarkisian being a championship-level coach.

“I think it just shows you the absolute disgust at Texas for Tom Herman and I can use a lot of parallels here Lance and people can imagine it any way they want, but Texas went shopping for Urban Meyer,” Finebaum said. “If Urban Meyer had said yes, Herman would’ve been gone three weeks ago. But they couldn’t get Urban Meyer, Herman knew that, Herman sat there and fumed and we even had a guy who claimed Herman was trying to get the South Carolina job, which sounded like a stretch and was so ugly that his wife went on social media and denied it. But that relationship was frayed so I don’t blame Texas for getting rid of him. The money doesn’t phase Texas, you know that. Texas has more money than anyone, and if you don’t believe that, just ask any graduate of University of Texas.”

Sarkisian fit the vacancy because he was around, Finebaum believes.

“To me, Sark was the best available coach. I think it’s as simple as that. He’s by no means on the level of Urban Meyer or Nick Saban or Ryan Day or Dabo Swinney,” he said. “But I think they realized they had to make a change even though Herman won his last two games, it was not going to satisfy anyone out there and Sark was the hot name. He was the cool guy of the month and they said, you know what, let’s go grab him.”
