Former Alabama RB Trent Richardson to continue football career playing professionally in Mexico
Trent Richardson is officially a professional football player in Mexico.
After announcing he was joining the Caudillos de Chihuahua, a Futbol Americano de Mexico franchise, in an undefined role in February, Richardson officially inked a one-year contract to play for the team last week.
“A lot of people don’t get this opportunity and so for them to take a chance on me to have another opportunity for me and my family, it’s big. It’s huge, and I know they think I’m doing them a favor. But they’re definitely doing me a favor,” Richardson said during the press conference.
The former Alabama standout also said he plans to be a “brand ambassador” for the league.
“I’m going to do everything I can to make this league better,” Richardson said. “I’m going to do everything I can to make sure there’s more awareness to Mexico because people get the wrong idea when you’re talking about the Mexico league. People didn’t even know it was a league. And so when coach first came to me, I said, ‘Y’all play football over there?’ And I’m thinking football, I’m thinking soccer. In America, soccer is what we think about football. I said, ‘Coach, I don’t play no soccer.’”
Richardson’s last NFL snap came in 2016 as a member of the Baltimore Ravens. After being released, Richardson joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL. He then came back to the states to play for Birmingham in the Alliance of American Football, a spring league that shut down before completing its first season in 2019.
