Sha’Carri Richardson is poised to be one of the biggest stars at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics but her appearance at the event is reportedly in jeopardy after she testing positive for marijuana.

Following the results of her positive test, Richardson has been suspended from the US Olympic team. Richardson’s test was administered on June 19 during her appearance at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon.

Athletes that fail drug tests are subject to three months suspension.

Richardson acknowledged her failed drug test during a recent appearance on the TODAY show. She also noted her use of the drug came following the death of her mother.

“Right now I’m just putting all of my energy into dealing with what I need to deal with to heal myself,” Richardson said on Friday morning.

“I want to take responsibility for my actions,” she added. “I’m not looking for an excuse.”

“I would like to say to my fans and my family and my sponsorship, to the haters, too, I apologize. As much as I’m disappointed, I know that when I step on that track, I don’t represent myself, I represent a community that has shown me great support, great love.”
