Peyton Barber was entering his second year with the Washington Football Team. Now, he’ll be looking for a new team to play for during the 2021 season.

Barber was released by Washington on Tuesday, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post, as the team continued to trim its roster to get down to 53 players by the 4 p.m. ET deadline. Barber, a former Auburn running back, is a 5-year NFL veteran who spent his first 4 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Last year, Barber carved out a role with Washington as a short-yardage back. In 16 games, he rushed for 258 yards and 4 touchdowns, but he averaged a career-low 2.7 yards per carry.

With Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic as the clear top 2 running backs on Washington’s depth chart, Barber was battling for the third spot with undrafted rookie Jaret Patterson. However, Patterson’s impressive showing throughout training camp led to Barber getting released.

After attending Auburn from 2013-15, Barber went undrafted and signed with the Buccaneers ahead of the 2016 season. He signed a 2-year deal with Washington in March 2020, so he still had 1 more season on that contract when he got cut.

Now, the 27-year-old will look to sign with a team before the start of the 2021 season, which gets underway Sept. 9.
