When Mississippi State faces Memphis this weekend at the Liberty Bowl, one thing will be missing: cowbells. According to Liberty Bowl Stadium officials via Twitter, when asked by a fan will the cowbells be permitted, the answer was an emphatic “Big Fat No.” accompanied by a #GoTigersGo hashtag.

The story of why Bulldog fans ring cowbells is legendary.

As the story goes, a wandering Jersey cow became a good luck charm in the mid-20th century after having strolled onto the field during which turn into a victorious home football game. Since then, the ringing of the cowbells has been a State tradition.

A tradition, however, that a lot of fans around the SEC and, apparently, Memphis do not like.

Mississippi State and Memphis will face each other Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will air on ESPN2.
