Top-ranked Alabama survived its first SEC test of the season, hanging on to beat Florida at the Swamp on Saturday, 31-29.

The Crimson Tide roared out to a 21-3 lead after the 1st quarter, and it appeared that the game might be a blowout.

From that point on, however, it was the Gators who were dominant, even though their comeback bid fell short.

Especially concerning for Nick Saban’s team was a defense that allowed 440 yards, including 245 on the ground, and that was with Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson, a dynamic runner, unable to play due to a hamstring injury.

The close call left many wondering after the game whether Alabama might be the clear-cut best team in America.

Sunday morning on ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” SEC analyst and radio personality Paul Finebaum offered his thoughts on the Crimson Tide after what he saw in Gainesville on Saturday.

“I’m concerned, especially on the defensive side of the ball,” Finebaum said. “We have been told prior to the season that this may be the most elite defense in Nick Saban’s tenure, and that defense in the final 2.5 quarters yesterday was anything but elite. They got gashed constantly. The Florida offensive line just went right through the defensive line of Alabama and nobody thought that was even possible. Alabama could barely stop anything.

“So, you have to be concerned about that. Yes, you’re impressed about Bryce Young and impressed with Alabama hanging on in a very difficult place. Florida’s better than we thought, but Alabama — maybe we better ask for that trophy back we awarded them 2 weeks ago.”

Alabama will look to move to 4-0 on the season next Saturday at home game against Southern Mississippi.
