A lot of names are flying around as potential candidates for LSU’s opening at head coach. Now that it’s known Ed Orgeron won’t be returning in 2022, who will lead the Tigers into the future?

More names continue to be added to the mix, and earlier this week, CBS Sports reporter Dennis Dodd raised another possibility. During an appearance on CBS Sports HQ, Dodd brought up a current Power Five coach who could be seen as a sleeper candidate: Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy.

“Don’t discount Mike Gundy,” Dodd said recently on CBS Sports HQ. “I’m not saying he’s getting the job. I’m saying he’d be interested. There are people in his camp that are very upset that he makes about $800,000 less than Gary Patterson at TCU. They would argue that Mike Gundy has accomplished more at Oklahoma State than Gary Patterson has.”

Gundy has been the head coach at Oklahoma State since 2005, going 143-67 during that time. This year, the Cowboys are off to a 6-0 start and are ranked No. 8 in the country heading into Saturday’s game at Iowa State.

Gundy has never been a head coach anywhere other than Oklahoma State. He was the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator from 2001-04, and he also had a stint as an assistant on their staff from 1990-95. In between, he was an assistant at Baylor (1996) and Maryland (1997-2000).
