Billy Napier hasn’t been the head coach at Florida for long, but he’s already made a recruiting splash.

On Wednesday, the Gators were successful in their late push to land Kamari Wilson, a 5-star safety who currently attends IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Wilson is the only 5-star recruit in Florida’s 2022 class, so he provided a huge boost to the group.

It also showed that Napier wants to push hard to land the top recruits from Florida and get them to stay in state by coming to Gainesville. And he discussed that with Aaron Murray during an appearance on SiriusXM SEC Radio on Wednesday.

“The state of Florida produces, on average, around 300 Division I players a year,” Napier said. “I do think that the key here is that we flip over every rock, we evaluate each player. And then the ones that we decide fit, they fit our critical factors — height, length, verified speed, character, a competitive spirit, the makeup of a young man — once we declare that we want them, then I think we’ve got to change gears there and get into the recruiting mode.

“We’re fortunate right now, I think it’s a very unique time at the University of Florida. It’s the right place at the right time. We’re going to be well equipped. For the 1st time in probably 15 to 20 years, Florida is going to have 1 of the elite facilities in the country. We move into an $85 million, 140,000-square-foot facility in June, football only. I think that’s a huge game-changer for Florida that they haven’t had in the past. You combine that with the administration’s willingness to buy into our vision, we’ve created a great infrastructure. We’re in the process of hiring a small army here to run this organization. So I think there’s a unique timing element here at Florida, relative to the facility component and the infrastructure component, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Napier has only been Florida’s head coach since Nov. 28. So he hasn’t gotten an opportunity to go through a full recruiting cycle with the Gators yet.

However, if this is a sign of things to come, then Florida could be a big factor on the recruiting trail for quite some time to come.
