Dennis Gates agree to a 6-year contract to be the Missouri men’s basketball coach this week, and his salary details have also been released.

Dave Matter of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Gates’ contract at Missouri is for $16.5 million guaranteed, and the salary increases by year, starting at $2.5M in year 1.

Gates was hired at Missouri after the former Cleveland State coach engineered one of the biggest turnarounds in Division I basketball. The Vikings went 19-8 and reached the NCAA Tournament last season, then went 20-11 and lost in the first round of the NIT this season. The program won just 11 games 3 years ago.

Along with the back-to-back postseason appearances, he led the Vikings to 2 Horizon League Championships.

When he was introduced, Gates said, “I left a special place for a special place. An unbelievable institution from an academic standpoint, but also being a flagship Power Five institution in this state — it’s only us — that means something. That means a lot.”

Gates, who has 17 years of Division I coaching experience, coached at Cleveland State after 8 seasons on Leonard Hamilton’s staff at Florida State.

Before Florida State, Gates worked at Marquette, Cal, Northern Illinois and Nevada.

A combo guard for the Cal Golden Bears, Gates served as a three-year captain during his playing days.
