Marcus Spears has joined in on the reaction to Brian Kelly’s interaction with an LSU beat reporter this week with some blunt advice: “Jesus ain’t standing over your stadium no more.”

Spears spoke on ESPN’s “First Take” after Stephen A. Smith and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo defended Kelly’s actions when the LSU coach jokingly told the reporter, Leah Vann of The Advocate, who was late to the press conference on Tuesday that she owed him $10.

“This is a different animal than you’re dealing with in Louisiana,” Spears said. “And for as much as people talk about different cultures and what you’re walking into, look, Brian Kelly is a good coach. His resume says that. He’s done a phenomenal job in college football, been to national championships, albeit never winning one. So there is some cache and there is some credibility that comes along with Brian Kelly.”

Spears noted that he’s familiar with The Advocate and Louisiana media in general from his days growing up in the state.

“Ultimately, this speaks to where Brian Kelly is right now,” Spears said. “I’m not going to make this an overall serious conversation, but there is a different way, and a different interaction in the Southeastern Conference, with how it’s covered, with how teams are dealt with, with your relationship with the media, your relationship with fans and people when you’re out and about that doesn’t exist at Notre Dame.”

Spears added that Kelly is still dealing with a learning curve at LSU, in terms of culture and lately, the media. Spears added that Kelly must make a connection with the culture of Louisiana and the people who cover the team.
